Days like this

Life is full of repetitive and mundane tasks. And, occasionally, also encounters like this.

This is one of my favourite places. With the mist that often hangs in the air from the falls, it feels like the lungs of the rainforest. The character of this spot changes dramatically with water levels. When the salmon are running and the water levels are much higher than in this photo, I love to just sit and watch the fish leaping up the falls.
I have teamed up with Marven Robinson of the Gitga’at First Nation to offer two spirit bear watching and photography trips in the Great Bear Rainforest for Sept 2015. After guiding on the coast for 11 years I don’t know of a better way to have intimate encounters with spirit bears. These trips will be something special.
I am spending the month of September exploring the central coast of BC, working as a naturalist and soaking in the beauty of the place. I’ve been at Great Bear Lodge for a week and…
Three years is a long time to wait for anything. But finally (finally!) I was able to see the Great Bear Rainforest IMAX film.
Last fall I spent six weeks roaming around the Great Bear Rainforest while guiding on a sailboat and at a floating lodge nestled in a fjord. I took pictures just about every day, but until this week, I hadn’t even looked at any of the images yet…
Twelve years ago I arrived in the Great Bear Rainforest for my first job as a wildlife guide. I was a seasoned field biologist and had spent many seasons over mountains and tundra, but the coast was a whole new world for me. My boat skills were rusty, I knew almost nothing about the ocean and tides – and very little about grizzly bears. But it was not difficult to decipher that I was in a very special place. And it did not take me long to fall in love with it.
