Grizzly Expectations.

ByTim Irvin December 7, 2014March 28, 2022
A grizzly bear swimming past zodiac

Sometimes unexpected things happen.  When this grizzly bear decided to swim across the river I don’t think it expected that the current would push it right past our zodiac that was anchored mid-channel. But that is exactly what happened.

This made for some excitement as it swam past within 10 or 15 feet.  But the bear seemed more intent on searching out his next salmon meal than with the wide-eyed people watching him, so there was no need to reach for the bear spray.  Thanks to Des Peck who captured the moment in this photo and for showing how dapper I can look in an orange life jacket.

Sharing exhilarating moments like this with our guests is one of the things that keeps me coming back to work as a guide in the Great Bear Rainforest year after year.

This is one of my favourite places. With the mist that often hangs in the air from the falls, it feels like the lungs of the rainforest. The character of…
