The most curious sea wolf

ByTim Irvin March 20, 2025March 24, 2025
A black sea wolf lying on sand with ocean in background. Photo taken during a sea wolf tour.

We called his animal the Golden Wolf because of its tawny coat which shimmered like gold in the sun.

It was the most curious wolf I have ever met. While other members of the pack would keep their distance and keep moving when they saw us, this wolf sometimes approached and, in this case, just lay down and watched us for a while. This was not a one-off. Over two or three seasons, there were numerous times when this wolf would change its course to investigate us. Then, once its curiosity was satisfied, it would move on. It did not behave like a food-conditioned wolf, and, in this remote spot, it is unlikely it had been fed. More likely it was just curious about the novel sight of people in its territory. This wolf may have rarely–if ever–seen humans.

Like dogs, wolves exhibit highly variable behaviours between individuals. Behavioural differences among wolves are thought to be one reason wolves have successfully adapted to the enormously diverse habitats throughout their global range.
