Animalscapes

ByTim Irvin May 17, 2023May 17, 2023
Wide angle photo of a black bear with a second black bear in background.

My favourite wildlife photos tend to be the ones that show the animal in their environment. Some people call these kinds of images “animalscapes.” In this case, an American black bear in the temperate rainforest. As a bonus, there is a second black bear hunting for salmon in the background.

Notice how the right ear of the ear in the foreground flops over a little bit. That feature, his calm demeanor, and the bear’s large size relative to other bears on the creek, made this bear very recognizable. I have not seen this bear since 2019. I miss him. It was a pleasure to spend time in his presence.

If you love wildlife and wild places, you will love my email newsletter. It is chock-full of hopeful and inspiring stories and imagery from the wild, and is guaranteed (by me) to make you feel good about this incredible planet we live on. Sign up to stay connected.
