In a shocking and unexpected incident, a brown bear attacked a two-week old baby early this week. Remarkably, Nicolas Finlay Irvin appears to be unharmed.
The child’s father, Tim Irvin, is an experienced guide who leads people into the wilderness to observe and photograph grizzly bears. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he says. “Nick showed absolutely no fear.”
Irvin says this is just one of many things that has surprised and delighted him since his son’s birth. “As a new father I was shocked to learn that these kinds of encounters between bears and infants are actually quite common, and almost always totally harmless.”
Although Irvin is elated to be a new father, he admits that sleep deprivation may be interfering with his mental acuity. “I have no idea what any of this means,” he says.
